George this is was I what I know on this unit.
George Washington Upton, captured at Jonesboro, Georgia in September 1864. He was given parole after subscribing to the Oath of Alligiance while a prisoner of war in Atlanta, Georgia September 20, 1864. George shows up in 1st Battalion Mississippi Mounted Rifles, Company A, as a Sergeant. Soon after the war he retured to Jones County, Mississippi, packed up his family and moved to the middle of Texas, never to return. He widow tried to get a pension from the State of Mississippi but was refused due to George's Union records.
I found simular names in this unit that match other Confederates. Needs more research.
