Re: Columbus Civil War Hospital

I had a great-uncle, John Lewis Mathews of Pontotoc MS, who died in a Columbus MS hospital in 1862, at age 18. Said to have died from the measles. Family history notes include: "John went into the Civil War. He died in the hospital at Columbus MS of measles."

Were contagious patients mixed with wounded patients or was there a seperate hospital for all the soldiers with contagious diseases? I know a large number of soldiers died from measles and chicken pox, etc.

I have never been able to establish for sure which unit he served with or where he is buried. Any clues?
