It's built next to the site of Battery Robinette, where much of the second day's fighting took place. Of course much fighting took place to the north, where Price's Missourians broke through into the center of town.

General Maury said the Missouri Confederates were the best military command he ever saw. In 1861 they swore to fight the Yankees from Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico if need be. Survivors did exactly that, their last battle being on the shores of Mobile Bay, April 9, 1865.
