I gave a talk on Lovell at the Third Annual Deep Delta Civil War Symposium in Hammond, La., on June 9, 1989. The talk was published as "Mansfield Lovell," in "Leadership During the Civil War," edited by Roman J. Heleniak and Lawrence L. Hewitt (Shippensburg, Pa.: White Mane Publishing Co., Inc., 1992). It is scheduled to appear in a volume tentatively titled "Confederate Generals in the Western Theater: A Retrospective Anthology for Thomas Lawrence Connelly," which Larry Hewitt and I put together and which we hope will be printed by the University of Tennessee Press next year. Much of the essay deals with Lovell's generalship. It had been my intention at one time to expand it into a full biography. Whether I will pursue the book project or not is still in the air.
