Vandiver, age 30, enlisted in Company E, 23rd Mississippi Infantry on August 24, 1861 at, Iuka, Mississippi, September 22, 1862, recorded at home at the time of the surrender of Fort Donelson, arm shot off, elected 1st Lieutenant April 7, 1863 , his furlough expired August 27, 1863, subsequently recorded on October muster as having deserted, captured at Cornith, Mississippi November 1, 1863, forwarded to Memphis, Tennessee, no further records

E H. Vandiver,, age 21, enlisted in Company E, 23rd Mississippi Infantry on September 19,1862 at Iuka, Mississippi, captured at Fort Donelson February 16, 1862, sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois Prison camp, on sick furlough October 25, 1862, died of wounds July 25, 1863 at Brandon, Mississippi.

September 24.— Resigned at Jackson, Mississippi.

Stationed at Camp Lovell, Mississippi, November-December
1862.

September 24.— Reorganized at Jackson, Mississippi.

October 1.— Moved to Holly Springs to reinforce General [Earl]
Van Dorn.

December 1.— Marched twenty-five miles on retreat from
Abbeville, Mississippi.

December 5.— Engaged the enemy near Coffeeville, Mississippi, losing two men wounded.
Suffered many hardships during the month of December having but one tent to the company
and but one oven in which to cook rations.

Stationed at Beattie's Bluff, Mississippi, February 28-June 30,
1863.

May 19.— This company was in General Loring's Division at battle of Baker's Creek. It was not
deeply engaged. No casual- ties happened to this company. On retreat, marched thirty-three
miles in twenty-four hours.Lost no men on the retreat. After leaving Baker's Creek and marching
five days' hard marching, arrived at Jackson, Mississippi and after several other short marches,
find ourselves at Beattie's Bluff on Big Black. All company baggage, papers, etc., were cut off at
Baker's Creek, a portion of which was burned at Big Black Bridge. The rest is at Vicksburg. The
company is being tolerably well supplied with clothing again. All officers in fine spirits and are
ready for action.

Stationed at Newton, Mississippi, July-August 1863.

July 2.— This company arrived at camp on Big Black, after taking up its march from Beattie's Bluff,
Mississippi. The distance was about twenty-five miles.

July 5-7.— Started thence to Jackson and arrived July 7, a distance of about thirty miles.

July 8-16.— Went into the fortifications and remained there until night of July 16, during which time
had slight skirmishing in which had one man wounded and since died. On night of July 16
commenced our retrograde movement from Jackson.

July 18.— Arrived at camp near Morton, a distance of about twenty-three miles.

July 21.— Marched thence and arrived at camp near Forest Station, Mississippi the same day,
distance ten miles.

August 11-13.— Marched and arrived at camp near Newton Station, Mississippi August 13, a
distance about thirty miles.

Stationed at Canton, Mississippi, September-October 1863.

September 7-9.— This company taken up its march from Newton Station and arrived at Meridian,
a distance of thirty-five miles, on September 9.

October 1.— Left Meridian by railroad and arrived at Brandon the same day, a distance of eighty-five miles

October 16.— Left Brandon and arrived at Canton October 17, a distance of twenty-eight miles.

Stationed at Way's Bluff, Mississippi, November-December 1863.

This company has not been in any action since last muster. Has not changed camps but one time.
Marched from Canton to Way's Bluff, a distance of five miles. Health good and men in fine spirits.

Stationed at Montevallo, Alabama, March April 1864.

March 11.— This company reenlisted for the war.

April 4-10.— This company left Demopolis, Alabama and arrived at Montevallo, Alabama April 10,
a distance of about eighty-five miles. All books and papers belonging to this company prior to bat-
tle of Baker's Creek were lost.

Stationed at Demopolis, Alabama, April 1, 1864.

April 1.— I certify, on honor, that the within is a true and correct list of noncommissioned officers and
privates who are entitled to bounty on April 1, 1864 in Section No. 3, made in accordance with Paragraph
[No. 3], General Orders No. 27, Adjutant and Inspector-General's Office, Richmond, Virginia, March Series
1864.

Stationed at Atlanta, Georgia, July August 1864.

July 3.— Left Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia and retreated back to Atlanta, Georgia. There has been
skirmishing more or less every day since in which portions and sometimes all were engaged.
