Alan,

I don't know if you read my post regarding this man's loss of an arm, my conjecture that this was an accident or a personal assault and my question as to how an amputee was treated or viewed by the Confederate army after the loss of a limb. Was a wounded Confederate soldier who lost a major body part, such as an arm or leg, required to return to duty or was it optional? As an amputee, if they did return to duty, could they resign or leave military service at a time of their choice? Could the pension board take into consideration a soldier's injuries as an offset to a claim of desertion?

I consider you an expert on such questions as these, so I'm hoping you might be able to provide some information.
