James E. Ballard enlisted as a Private in Company A "University Greys," 11th Mississippi Infantry, September 13, 1861 at Camp Jones, killed in action at Gettysburg July 3, 1863 [Compiled Service Records]

There was also a Charles C. Ballard, 16 year old School Boy, born in Kemper County, Miss., who enlisted at the same time in Company A, discharged July 31, 1862 at Richmond, Va, as being under the age of conscription

At Gettysburg on July 3, the 11th Mississippi lost 16 killed: 3 Captains, 1 1st Lieutenants, 5 2nd Lieutenants, 1 3rd Lieutenant, 2 Sergeants, & 4 Privates

Stationed at Lynchburg, Virginia, May 13, 1861.
May 13.— Muster-in roll of Captain William B. Lowry's Com-
pany, in the Eleventh Regiment of Mississippi Volunteers, com-
manded by Colonel William H. Moore, called into the service of
the Confederate States in the Provisional Army under the provi-
sions of the Act of Congress passed March 6, 1861 by — from
May 13, 1861 (date of this muster) for the term of twelve months,
unless sooner discharged. . . .

Stationed at Winchester, Virginia, April 26-June 30, 1861.
Stationed at Camp Jones, July-August 1861.
July 2.— Marched from Winchester to Darkesville, distance sev-
enteen miles. Returning, left Darkesville July 7 and reached
Winchester same day.
July 18.— Marched from Winchester to Piedmont, distance about
thirty-five miles.

July 20.— Came by rail from Piedmont to Manassas, arriving at
the latter place on July 20.

July 21.— Was engaged in the battle. Lost in action three killed
and seven wounded. Four of the latter have since died of their
wounds.
Stationed at Camp Fisher, Virginia, September-October 1861.
September 13.— The company struck tents at Camp Jones and
marched to Camp Fisher, eighteen miles, the same day.
On two occasions the company was called out to meet the
enemy but intelligence of his non-approach being received, was
ordered back to quarters.

October 31-November 1.— In the evening the company was
marched to the Evansport Batteries, seven miles, for picket duty
and returned on the morning of November 1.
Stationed at Camp Fisher, November 1861-February 1862.
Stationed at camp near Richmond, March-April 1862.
Stationed near Martinsburg, May-June 1862.
Stationed near Petersburg, Virginia, May-June 1864.
May 4.— Left camp near Orange Court-House.
May 5-6.— Participated in the battle of the Wilderness.
May 10.— Marched from there to [illegible] Mills and fought on
May 10.

May 12.— Marched to Spotsylvania Court-House and fought on
May 12. Marched from there to North Anna River and from
there to Petersburg.
Stationed near Petersburg, July-December 1864.
