Re: Tupelo/Harrisburg.....I had an ancestor there

After the battle of Harrisburg some 300 wounded confederate troops were taken to the home of Dr Calhoun in the Palmetto community. He was the nephew of John C Calhoun of S C. His wife Jane was a member of the well placed Orr family and was the stength of the household. The wounded were put wherever and all were fed even if it ment loosing the family pet goat. Some 17 or more died and were buried just of the house. The wounded that were able to be moved were taken to okolona in wagons. There was a college there that was used as a hospital, sometimes referred to as Wayside. Some were moved to Lauderdale, as there some 6 or 7 buried there from Hburg. The Union army established a hospital in a set of warehouse buildings in the SW 1/4 of the intersection of the E/W road and the M and O RR. There were some captured rebs there also. The yank troops that stayed behind to care for the men in Tupelo were allowed to pass through the lines to Vicksburg after their task was completed. After being shot at Old Town Creek, Forrest is said to have been cared for at the Lucia Mcshan house on 4th street in Verona. After the battle at Ole Town the yanks had a field hospital at/or near the land that has been reciently preserved before they moved back toward Memphis. In the last year or so evidence has been found that might indicate a field hospital on the East Conf flank on what is now Thomas St. The battle field was about 2 miles from Tupelo and 2 miles or so from the Calhoun place so that a field hospital might be likely. Local history has that the Baptist church in Tupelo was used as a hospital, as was a large frame house just North of the modern day courthouse . Time clouds the fact if this was after Hburg and/ or during the coming and goings of the many 1000s of troops that passed through Tupelo during the war. On a more modern note, the Brices CR commisson has been able to secure a sizeable grant to help improve the interpretation of BCR. Also there are plans to add a wing to the present center to help interpret Harrisburg, and hopefully the recently acquired land at Old Town Creek.
