Not trying to plug any one supplier of Confederate uniforms here, but C&D Jarnigan at http://www.jarnaginco.com/ have always been extremely helpful to me when I have had questions about MS CS uniforms.

They have outfitted so many people with so many different MS CS uniforms that they would probably have a better idea of what the 42nd MS wore than anyone else I can think of.

I would be very surprised if they couldn't give you at least a very good idea of what the 42nd would have been wearing. If they don't know the exact answer, their guess would still be the most educated on you could find.
