Thanks! I'll look at this info too. The Smith surname is a real pain in the backside to find anything easily. AND, I'm working from the census information and oral history. William and family are in the 1860 census in Itawamba County and his wife and kids are in Memphis in the 1870 census. Oral history says William was wounded on the first or second day(s) of Shiloh and he was taken to Corinth where he subsequently died. But I've learned from experience that oral history is not always what really happened. If he's not in the 10th, as you suggest, I'll keep looking at all the troops from that county and go from there.
