George, this is a little off topic, but how did the Army get from Tupelo to the Carolinas? I would think it was a long march thru part of Mississippi, across Alabama, and Georgia just to get to Augusta. By this time in the war was there not Federal Cavalry patrolling most of the routes they could have probably took?? And to get across Georgia after Sherman had made his "march to the sea" was a tremendous feat! And to get that far in that little of time, especially knowing by then the rails were torn up east of Montgomery. Also knowing that there was very little if any supplies on their way, most of the areas had probably already been visited and destroyed by Federal troups. I have never read exactly what route they took, nor how long it must have took. Also when did Gen. Hood leave the army? Just a few things that I have never read and had often wondered about, but just never had the time to do any research.
