I had initially thought that perhaps he had served with the 61st TN IN, because his census records reflect that he was born in TN and there was a WS in that unit, and there is a WS in an earlier Knox county census who was born the same year as my gggf. (The 61st was raised in counties adjacent to or near Knox.
My understanding is that, ironically, the 61st and the 4th were under the same divisional command at Vicksburg. There is a possibility that there were two William S. Norwood's, born the same year, serving in close proximity on the the same line. However, William was a common Norwood name, and I have even seen a number of William S's.
