Re: men buried in Shady Grove Cem. at Iuka..THANKS

Anthony, unfortunately, I don’t have your William M. Scott of the 3rd Ark Cav, but I do have a couple of references related to the unit, (and other Arkansans) if you're interested.

In The Daily Avalanche (Memphis, Tenn.) on 27 June 1867, a list of Iuka burials compiled by a Dr. Wm. M. Willson, appeared. He called it “a list of Confederate dead, so far as could be obtained from the head boards of the tombs of those who have lately been removed and reinterred at this place ...”.

The clear inference is that these men had been buried elsewhere and their remains recently brought into Iuka for reburial (some of whom reportedly died as late as 1864). These are the identified Arkansas soldiers on Dr. Willson’s list (one of whom is from the 3rd Ark Cav):

“R. Brown, Company B, Third Arkansas Cavalry”
“W.B. Lafave, Twentieth Arkansas regiment”
“S. Watts, Company F, Stirman’s regiment of sharpshooters, Arkansas volunteers”
“M. Langley, Company D, Fifteenth Arkansas Regiment”

Dr. Willson also included an entry for a “T.J. Reeves, company and regiment unknown”

A second, and quite similar (yet somewhat different) list compiled by a Mr. Samuel N. DeWoody appeared later, also in The Daily Avalanche, on 26 Oct 1868. DeWoody’s letter is dated 27 April 1866, which actually predates Dr. Willson’s list. In his variation, differing in some names/details, these are those identified as Arkansas soldiers:

“B. Brown, company B, 3rd Arkansas cavalry”
“J.A. Blair, 1st Arkansas cavalry”
“M. Langley, company D, 15th Arkansas”
“W.B. Lofave, 29th Ark.”
“T.W. Reeve, 18th Arkansas”

As near as I could ever determine, the most likely candidates from names on these lists:

There’s record for a “Robert Brown,” Pvt, Co B, 3rd Ark Cav who was last noted as “sick” and detailed as nurse in his brigade hospital for July-Aug 1862, but again, no record of his death (source: NARA M317).

There is a “Moses Langly” listed in Co K, 15th (Josey’s) Ark Inf, but could find no record or information about his death (NARA M317).

“W.B. Lafave” is a Sgt, Co I, 20th Ark Inf, initially reportedly “killed Oct 3, 1862,” but apparently WIA Corinth/Hatchie Bridge (gunshot to groin) and died of his wound as a POW at Iuka on 10 Nov 1862 (NARA M317).

“Thomas W. Reeve,” does appear as a Pvt, 18th Ark Inf, WIA at Corinth on 4 Oct, and died of his wounds 8 Nov 1862 as a paroled POW (NARA M317)

From Dr. Willson’s list, the surname Watts (for both a Josiah and James M.) appears in Stirman’s 1st Ark, but no initial “S.” and no record for either man found shows information for his death.

Likewise, but from DeWoody’s list, the surname Blair (Constantine) also appears in Stirman’s 1st Ark, but could not find record of “J.A.”; but the Blair surname (William H.) also appears in 1st (Colquitt’s) Ark Inf, but again, no record close to anyone named “J.A.”
