Re: Nelson C Forbes 7th Mississippi

Lt. Nelson C. Forbes was captured December 16, 1864 at Nashville and was sent to the Military Prison at Louisville, Kentucky which was used a place to gather then forward Confederate prisoners north. Lt. Forbes is shown as leaving there December 20, 1864 and was sent to Johnson's Island Military Prison. He was released after taking the oath of allegiance on June 6, 1865.

He is listed at the time of his taking the oath as a resident of Columbus, Mississippi. Age 33, dark complexion and dark hair. He had blue eyes and was 5'9" tall.

I didn't see anything on his service record (I just glanced through it) that shows him being wounded or out sick. Only once was he listed as absent without leave (February 1864) but that seems to have been resolved because no mention is made of it on the next roll card and he was not fined or reduced in rank. He also shows up in the officers rating report as "Effecient & Competent". You can be proud of this man's service. He stayed true til the end.

Johnson's Island P.O.W. cxamp has its own website here...

Scroll to the bottom and click on "Barbiere List of POW's" to see P.O.W listings. If your ancestor isn't listed it is an error on the website and you should contact the administrator and let him know.
