Remarks: Transferred from the 40th Miss. by order of General Polk, special order no. 84
Interpretation: Pvt. Ellis transferred from the 40th Miss. to the 14th Miss. Inf. Reg. under orders issued by General Polk.
Card footnote: The 14th Regiment Mississippi Infantry was organized in May and June, 1861, of companies which had previously been in the State service and was mustered into the Confederate service for twelve months. It was surrendered at Fort Donelson, Tenn., February 16, 1862, and exchanged at Vicksburg, Miss., about September, 1862, immediately after which it was re-organized.
Interpretation: The 14th Miss. Inf. Reg. was re-organized immediately after it was exchanged, meaning that it immediately reconstitued itself as a military unit. No mention of reorganizing the 14th into the 40th.
