My great, great grandfather Lorenzo Taylor served in the 17th, Company B. He was born in New York and his family traveled to the Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin area before the war. According to family stories he went down to Mississippi to work on the railroad and when the war broke out he somehow ended up having to enlist in the Confederate army. He enlisted in May 1861, was listed as a POW April 13th, 1862 and declared a deserter in May of 1862. I am trying to piece the story together. He may have deserted and gave himself up to Union Troops to get back up North or else was actually captured somewhere in April 1862. His family resided in Chicago and Wisconsin by then as his brother was contracted to build the Military Road from the UP.

Does anyone know if there is an actual list for Camp Douglas or Camp Randall listing the prisoners held in either camp? I have seen lists for the dead in the camps but not just the prisoner list. I assume this is where he was sent. I also found it odd that on the POW list he was on his brothers name is written next to his, but he was not a confederate soldier. Perhaps he was turned over to his brother who was in the Union Service?

I thought this was all interesting as we do not have any confederates in the family. Just thought I would share after seeing your posts.
