His name was John Culpepper Smith B 31 JAN 1835 in Anson County, NC D 11 JAN 1863 Richmond, Wise, VA. His parents were Samuel Smith and Margaret "Peggy" Hutchinson. He married Elizabeth Livingston 30 NOV 1858 in Anson County, NC. They apparently left shortly after they married heading west, settling in Cockrum, Desoto County, Mississippi. He enlisted 8 AUG 1862 in the 17th Mississippi Infantry "Pettus Rifles" Company I for a period of 3 years. On his muster rolls, starting with Sept/OCT 1862 he was listed as sick and in the hospital. I guess he was "hauled" all the way to Virginia because I found him on the 1st "Muster Roll" "appears on Hospital Muster roll of General Hospital in Liberty, VA in Sept/OCT 1862 and off and on he is "sick or in the hospital". On the muster rolls it shows him being received at General Hospital 9 and then transferred to General Hospital # 2 in Richmond, VA (both hospitals in Richmond) on 6 JAN 1863 and it shows he died 11 JAN 1863. There is another one that shows he died 12 JAN 1863. I found a "Smith Family Tree Book written by General William Alexander Smith and W. Thomas Smith". It was written in 1922. That is the beginning of "finding" John Culpepper Smith. The Book says that it is said that John Culpepper Smith died 11 JAN 1863 in Richmond and he was probably a Civil War Soldier. I was able to trace him and I am not real sure how exactly how I found him at Hollywood Cemetery but he was listed as "J.C. Smith" on the records but buried without a headstone. I called Hollywood Cemetery and they put me in touch with Civil War Historian and Author, Chris Ferguson. He is "the" Historian for Confederate Soldiers at Hollywood Cemetery. Hollywood Cemetery said that if he could verifiy that it was MY GGG Grandfather then I could get him a headstone. I emailed him and got a response pretty quick from him. He was impressed that I had learned so much about my GGG Grandfather. He was able to verifiy that it WAS him. He said that there is NO WAY to REALLY know if he died on 11 JAN 1863 or the 12th but since a muster roll said it and the Smith Family Tree Book said the 11th.. we would go with the 11th !
I ordered him a headstone so now he will never be forgotten again! When John Culpepper Smith left for the Civil War, his wife, Elizabeth Livingston Smith was VERY pregnant with my GG Grandfather, John Thomas Smith. He was born 12 SEPT 1862. She remarried in Oct of 1863 and had man more children and all stayed in the area of Marshall County, Mississippi. Anything else you want to know just ask ..I will help if i can!

I also mentioned his brother, Thomas Flake Smith. He also settled in Cockrum, Desoto County, Mississippi and enlisted in the 18th Mississippi Cavalry. I can give you more information on him if you are interested.
