Stationed at Corinth, Mississippi, June 7, 1861.
June 7.— Muster-in roll of Captain M. Bell's Company I, in the
Seventeenth Regiment of Mississippi, commanded by Colonel W.
S. Featherston, called into the service of the Confederate States in

the Provisional Army under the provisions of the Act of Congress
passed February —, 1861 by — from June 1, 1861 (date of
this muster) for the term of twelve months, unless sooner
discharged. . . .

September 20.— From Big Springs to Burnt Bridge on Goose
Creek at night. From then[ce] to Edwards Ferry.
September 21.— Returned to Edwards Ferry. From thence to
Harrison's Bluff. Engaged the enemy; whipped them and re-
turned to Leesburg about 9 p.m.
September 22.— Marched to fortifications.
September 23.— To Carter's Mills
September 27.— Returned to Leesburg.
September 28.— To [illegible] Store, eight miles above Leesburg.
September 30.— To Big Spring at night to Leesburg.

November 18.— Took up the line of march from Culpeper Court-
House to Fredericksburg, Virginia.
November 21.— Arrived at Fredericksburg, Virginia.
December 11.— In action.

Stationed at Fredericksburg, Virginia, January-February 1863.
The company has been in no engagement since the fight at
Fredericksburg. Has been on picket duty with a portion of the
brigade nearly two months. Have been in quarters in the city.
Have not drilled much owing to the severity of the weather.

May 27, 1861.— The Pettus Rifles were organized at Cockrum,
De Soto County, Mississippi and mustered into state service by
Captain J. McGuirk.

June 1.— Arrived at Corinth, Mississippi.
June 13.— The regiment, being organized, started to Virginia by
rail.
June 18.— Arrived at Manassas and remained stationary.
July 21.— Battle of Bull Run.
August 9.— Ordered to Leesburg, Virginia. Remained quiet.
Encamped there until battle of Ball's Bluff.
October 21.— Battle of Ball's Bluff.
Wintered at Leesburg.
March 7, 1862.— Ordered to Culpeper Court-House and
remained there.
April 7.— Moved by rail via Richmond to Yorktown.
May 3.— Retreated to Richmond suffering much for food on the
march. Subsisted three days on parched corn.
Remained quietly encamped near Richmond until the "Seven-
Days' fight."
June 30.— The company participated in the battle of Savage
Station.
July 2.— Participated in the battle of Malvern Hill.
August 18.— Ordered to the vicinity of Manassas. From thence
to Leesburg and on into Maryland via Frederick City.
September 15.— Invested Harper's Ferry
September 16.— Charged the Heights. Forced the garrison to
capitulate. Moved directly to Sharpsburg.
September 20.— Participated in the fight [at Sharpsburg].
September 22.— Retreated to Virginia. Encamped at Bunker
Hill.
November 1.— Ordered to Culpeper.
November 18.— Made a forced march to Fredericksburg.
Arrived just in time to prevent crossing of the enemy. Guarded
the fords of the river opposite town.
December 11.— Enemy tried for twelve hours to effect crossing
but, being severely repulsed in our front, moved to the left and
came in the rear. We were forced to retire to our works.
December 13.— Heavy fighting on our left and right. No attack
in our front.
Wintered in Fredericksburg.
May 3, 1863.— Hotly engaged from daylight to 1 p.m.
company was much exposed on skirmish.
June 1.— Ordered to Pennsylvania via Culpeper.

July 1.— Arrived at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
July 2-3.— Participated in battle of Gettysburg.
July 7.— Retreated to Hagerstown, Maryland.
July 14.— [Marched] from thence to Virginia. Encamped in
Orange County.
September 7.— Ordered to Georgia by rail.
September 18.— Arrived at Ringgold, Georgia.
September 20.— Closed the battle of Chickamauga. Pursued the
enemy to county of Chattanooga.
October 24.— Ordered by railroad via Sweetwater, Tennessee to
Knoxville, Tennessee.
November 5.— Invested Knoxville. Engaged in continuous
sharpshooting for several weeks.
November 29.— At break of day charged for Loudon. Repulsed
with heavy loss.
December 4.— Retreated to vicinity of Rogersville, East
Tennessee.
December 18.— Advanced to Bean's Station. The enemy retired
in haste, etc.
December 24.— Went into winter quarters near Russellville.
February 14, 1864.— Advanced to New Market.
February 22.— Retreated via Greeneville to Bristol, troops
almost destitute of clothing.
April 13.— Ordered to Gordonsville, Virginia by rail. Encamped
at Gordonsville.
May 3.— The enemy crossed the Rapidan River.
May 6.— Participated in battle of Wilderness.
May 7.— Moved to the right.
May 9, 12.— Participated in battle of Spotsylvania Court-House
and being cut off, remained in rear of enemy twelve hours.
June 5.— Ordered to the right.
June 7-8.— Participated in the battles of Cold Harbor and
engaged in hot skirmishing for several —.
June 19.— Ordered from there to Petersburg.
Participated in the battle of Petersburg. Continuous sharp-
shooting for ten days.
July 10.— Ordered to north side of the James.
July 13.— Engaged by the enemy at Deep Bottom.
Ordered to Winchester via Culpeper Court-House.

September 3.— Participated in battle of Berryville.
September 9.— Ordered to Gordonsville. From thence [marched]
to Waynesborough.
October 19.— Participated in battle of Belle Grove.

Retreated to New Market, Virginia.
November 15. — Thence [marched] to Waynesborough.
