Re: Two wounded of 17th Mississippi

Confederate wounded who fell into the hands of the Federals were carried to different hospitals behind Union lines. However, in the case of Newton J. Tedder, Company D, 17th Mississippi, Greg Coco's book, Gettysburg's Confederate Dead, lists Tedder as having died at John S. Crawford's farm, on the north side of Walnut Avenue. His remains were disinterred after the war on 3 August 1872 along with six others and sent in a box marked 2-C-Miss to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond for reburial. John S. Crawford's farm was located on Marsh Creek, behind the Confederate lines, and served as the field hospital for men of Barksdale's and Semmes' brigades. Tedder would have been taken there by his comrades or by the ambulance corps after the battle on 2 July. The wounded soldiers occupied the house, barn, sheds and outbuildings. The stone house and barn were still standing as of a few years ago.
