Re: The First Vicksburg Campaign

I July 63, Bridges was ordered to return these companies to Waul and to report to S.D. Lee. This he did, but with units to be discovered he was then in several other battles before his death on 13 Feb 1864, 9 days after receiving saber or bayonet wound defending S.D. Lee and Wirt Adams. He was killed in a charge with two companies against a brigade at a bridge. He pushed the brigade back, before his death. This battle was one of the first of Sherman's Meridian Campaign.

Bridges carried the flags and guide on's captured at Brice's Cross Roads To Jo. Johnston for his historic actions, which were not recorded. He is buried in Jackson, MS in the old section of the Greenwood Cemetery with a VA marker, Lt.Col Harry W. Bridges. He also has a Texas Ranger Cross for his service before the war.

Bridges was Commander of Company I, 6TH Texas Cavalry Regiment, Bridges Battalion of Sharpshooters, Deputy Commander of Stirman's Arkansas Sharpshooter Regiment, and Battalion Commander of several other companies before his death, which is recorded in the Southern Historical Society Volumes in a report by Stephen D. Lee, Lieutenant General, CSA.

Thanks to information like yours, I keep learning more about Bridges, who was my GGF's commander in the 6th, the Battalion, and Company I of Stirman's Regiment.
