Thanks for the additional information Alan. I found the Oscar with wife Mary on the 1860 Adams County census and decided that must be the Captain Oscar Smith listed earlier... and not mine.

The only evidence I have that my Great G. Grandfather's name was Oscar is that he was listed on my great Grandmother's death certificate as her father. Her daughter gave the information so I have to assume it's correct. I'm beginning to think Oscar was a middle name though and just used by family... if he signed up under another name, I may never be able to track him down.
