The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Accuracy of Miss Graves Records

Brent --

I hope this isn't representative of what's found in that database. Personal and military information contains substantial errors. Example: the 1870 Mortality Census of Greene County MS shows that Edward W Byrd died of typhoid during the month of June. He was age 56 and was born in SC.

The military record cites the right unit, but service dates are way wrong. The 5th Mississippi State Regiment didn't organize until late 1862 and was disbanded on Sept 22, 1863, Columbus MS. Edward W Byrd's record shows that he enlisted at Americus on Dec 17, 1862.

If there's any interest in cleaning up errors (and I would expect more like this), please contact me.
