Dunbar Rowland states that the regiment was imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, after Donelson, and that nearly 100 died while in military prison, mainly at Indianapolis. My guess is that, after Nashville fell into Union hands later that month, they were transported by boat to Nashville, thence to Indianapolis, and from there to Camp Chase, probably by rail. Looks to me like he escaped during that period.
