Re: 34th North Carolina Infantry Regiment

My great grandfather, James Frank(lin?)Miller was from Rowan County NC and joined Company D of the 34th in 1861. He was AWOL in August 1863 after Gettysburg and was wounded May 6 "at or near the wilderness". This would have put him on the Orange Plank Road in AP Hill's Corps on the morning of Hancock's devastating attack. He was captured in April 1865 in a hospital in Richmond and paroled. I am attempting to confirm his presence, or absence, from the combat engagements of the 34th from 1862-1864. Any advice on some free resources to consult? Thanks
