Re: 53rd NC at Fort Mahone April 1865

Alan,

Although this is not a report on casualties, we find in Vol. 49, (Serial No. 103), OR Supplement, pp. 971-979 the Postwar account of Brigadier-General John Echols, C. S. Army, of action in Western Virginia and East Tennessee, October 1864-May 1865 addressed to General Robert Edward Lee.

"Staunton, Virginia, December 15, 1865

GENERAL: I have the honor to submit the following report of my operations from my accession to the command of the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee until the termination of the war by the surrender of the several Armies of the Confederacy. . . . . ."

Source: R. E. Lee Headquarters Papers, Box 3, Folder H, Virginia Historical Society.

I see a similiar report by Maj. Gen. Dabney Herndon Maury, however I do not have the beginning of the report to record the date.

I suspect there may be many more in the Lee papers.
