Yours is a very good suggestion, and Confederate casualties were published as late as the Battle of Selma, Ala., Apr.2, 1865. However, this late in the war, most newspapers inside Confederate lines had been sharply curtailed if not suspended altogether. For those inside Federal lines, U.S. authorites would only have permitted publication of a document from Confederate sources if it concerned the end of hostilities or wrong-doing by the rebels.
