Re: Ashe County Civil War Veterans

In checking various sources, including the National Archive, I have found no mention of either of my Wilcox/Wilcoxson ancestors. The sole source showing their names was the informaiton I cut/pasted for my queery. Thanks for looking into this.

The record you sourced was what I used to join the SCV, showing the service of my Great Grandfather Felix McGuire, Company B 65th NC (6th NC Cavalry). I also have a Great-Great Grandfather, Eli M. Church, who served in Company I 58th NC Infantry, Company C 5th Battalion NC Cavalry, and Company H 65th NC Troops (6th NC Cavalry). Felix is a maternal ancestor and Eli is a fraternal ancestor. Both are shown as on the rolls at kinston NC in 1864. Being from separate counties, Ashe and Watauga respectively, it is doubtful Felix and Eli ever knew each other. They may have met in passing but would not have any connection. The two families did not have a common descendent till I was born in 1947.

I still think, especially after your research, that the person who compiled the list just put in names of men by their age. At the 1860 Ashe county census, both Martin (20) and William (42) Wilcoxson were old enough to serve in the Confederate States Army.
