You are asking about Capt. Davie's Company, 7th North Carolina Senior Reserves. The National Archives collection includes records of company members, along with a descriptive roll, but no one named Skates is listed. The descriptive roll includes age, birthplace, eye and hair color, complexion, height &c.

Since members were enrolled as Senior Reserves, all should have been between the ages of 45 and 50 at enlistment.

Several men are on company roll having the first name James. These include James Sallie and James Scott.

As already mentioned, out of nearly 100,000 records of Confederate soldiers from North Carolina, only one has the last name Skates. The name could be Sykes or Sikes, much more common in that state.
