My GGGreat Grandfather (CPT Luther Kieffer) was part of the 14th NY Heavy Artillery. He was killed at Cold Harbor on the evening of 2 June 1864 when these unit's (part of Bennett's BDE on CSA Left flank) conducted a counter attack. There is evidence to suggest that he was in fact captured and died a day latter. The family recieved his diary and sash (with fatal bullet hole in it) back after the war. I believe that a confederate officer or soldier took these items from Luther and promised to return them to the family. This was a very honorable act and I would like to know who did it. I am looking for anyone who might have a letter, diary, or reference that mentions the fighting on 2 June 1864 and might mention the capture of a Union CPT from the 14th NY Heavy Artillery.
