I can't help you with the sash, but I live close to the site of the battle, and if your ancestor is buried near here, maybe I could get you some pictures of his grave, visited Cold Harbor National Cemetery (a cemetery specifically for Union dead), and I know it held a lot of New York young men, there, so far from home. It is a beautiful site, and you would be proud.
