I have a pretty rare book also. Written in 1960 entitled "South Carolina Secedes" written by John Mays.

It is a detailed examination of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession including detailed Biographies of all of the signers of that Document, of which one of my relatives was a signer. It goes into great details as to what these people believed were the justifications of secession. These are pretty well summerized within the Ordinance of Secession and its companion documents and even some letter between the delegate.

Almost every other seceding state also gave their grieviences as to why they took this action in published documents. And yes some of them do mention the slaves as a matter of property ownership rights granted under the Constitution being subverted by a federal Government.

But there were far more reasons given than just that. And almost every one of those complaints were rooted in the determination that the US Government was unlawfully exceeding it powers under the Constitution to direct and regulate the affairs within the soveriegn states under the 10th Amendment.

That by itself is still enough, in my opinion, of a reason to go to war again even today. And today it would have nothing to do with owning a slave if that happened.

Our Government is not supremely powerful. Nor was it supposed to be under the Constitution. Nor should it be.
