Chief,

I know what you mean. We had a so called "massacre" in my hometown of Saltville, Virginia which allegedly occured on Oct. 3, 1864. If one adhere's to author Thomas Mays' account of the aftermath of the battle, the number of murdered members of the 5th and 6th USCC is greater than the total number of Federal casualties! Author William Marvel's account however rebuts Mays' account. In our town those who delve into the history of the area have never come up with any evidence of a massacre. My G-G- Grandfather was mortally wounded on Oct. 1, 1864 in a skirmish with Union Cavalry. This was the day before the battle. His unit was delaying the Federal columns in order to give the defenders of the saltworks in the town time to prepare a defense.
