Yesterday I saw a History Channel program on which an African-American historian named Lerone Bennett debunked the idea that Lincoln was the Great Emancipator. Acccording to Bennett, Lincoln was a racist who used the slaves as a political stepping stone. I was a bit amazed to see an African-American who had such a view of Lincoln. Of course we southerners always knew the issue was of political expediency, but to hear a black man say this amazed me. My impression of Mr. Bennett after seeing this program, was that HE was just as much a racist. I got this impression by his tone of voice and the content of his statements. Has anyone seen this program, and would you care to comment.
