I was actually thinking more along the lines of what Grant did at Petersburg in 1865. To cause Meade to extend his lines to protect his flanks.

Again numbers argue against this being a successful manuver on Lee's part. But such movement on your opponets part usually if not coordinated well causes a weak point or even a gap in your defences as happen to Rosecran at Chickamauga on the second day.

There is also something about knowing that the enemy is in your rear that makes soldiers jumpy. Stuarts Cavalry wasn't a factor because until the 3rd he wasn't on the field and by that time the battle was over.

What was Stuart doing at Hanover in the first place, if Lee didn't think that Stuart could have effected the outcome of the Battle? Why didn't Stuart just protect Lee's flanks from such attacks as happen with Kilpatrick Cavalry on Hood's Division on Longstreets flank on the 3rd.
