Clearly she was exploited quite a bit by the abolishionish to promote their cause. Clearly the declaration that she was a slave and a Mulatto has to be questioned as to that statements truthfulness.

But no matter whether she was actually a slave, or of African ancestry is not important. The whole objective of such an organized effort was to gain sympathy for the abolishionist cause.

The whole point of finding a little Girl, like little Fannie, that is so obviously of mostly "white" ancestory and not black, was to show the people of the north that the slaves could "look" just like other white people up north. Again they were playing the race card, except in reverse. They were showing the exceptional case of slavery, if Fannie had been in fact a slave, to promote their cause, rather than the rule. And that would seem to display the bigotry of the north against blacks.

The fact that they didn't choose a child from among the hundreds of thousands available of obviously African ancestory, tells that they must have though their efforts would not be as successful if they chose such a child as their poster child. You know they could have found a cute little black child easier than they found little Fannie. And why did it take them 2 years to find the "right child" in Virginia? Alexandria, Virginia and Robert E. Lee's home was occupied by the Union Army the day after Virginia seceded. Where was little Fannie hiding in 1861 and 62?

All of this, in my opinion, argues against the popularity of that cause within the northern states if they had to go to that extent to stir up the passions against slavery, even among their own rank and files, if they had to treat her like a circus sideshow attraction.
