Peace Society in Texas

In May of 1862, there were the ussual anti-conscriptionist and the people who disagreed that North Texas should be left unprotected. They formed pro-union groups of the Peace Society. Well one man I forget his name was expelled from Cooke County. Another by the name of Hilliard was put on trial for disloyalty to the Confederacy and Texas. Mr Hilliards wife stood up in court and told everyone in attendance that she wished the Union soldiers would over run Texas and the men could come home to protect and provide for their families. Several men and women took Mrs. Hilliard from her home and lynched her in front of her children.

In October of 1862 there seemed to be a pro-union plot to attack the Confederate supply houses at Sherman, by slipping spies into the Peace Society they were able to not only stop the attack but arrest over 150 unionist in the plot. 41 hung for treasonist acts, this was called THe Great Hanging of Gainesville. All but one, the jury foreman, were hung for the hangings after the War.

It just goes to show you folks, Don't mess with Texas,,,,LOL
