Joe, part of it was that when folks in those times believed in something, they were willng to follow their beliefs to hell and back. Only some didn't make it back. The most fierce disagreements were along borderlands. As you said, North Texas; Kansas-Missouri; Kentucky, Tennessee, Western virginia, the mountains of Georgia and the Carolinas.
