Craig, indentured servants and others who served time as someone's hired servant is hardly the same as race base slavery. Being a slave, because you were born that. Not to work seven or eight years to pay off a debt. I come from Quaker stock (not one myself, grandfather left the Society of Friends to fight in World War 1.) You are right that by the 1860's most of those in Western Europe questioned the morality of slavery. Heck the most autocratic European leader, the Czar, outlawed serfdom in what, 1861? My people however had stood against chattel slavery since the 1600's. They just didn't believe in killing a man to set a man free. My ancestor worked as a nurse with the United States Sanitary Commission. I'm very proud of him
