Seems like that Sherman and Grant gave orders to burn several towns, Jackson , Mississipii being one of them. Didn't Lincoln say to one of his generals "do something useful, burn a town?"

I have read of an instance Confederate soldiers were beat to death after surrendering, so I have no doubt such orders could have been issued.
