No Sally. Most battles are heavily scripted, but that does not include who gets shot or captured.

For realism sake, it would be better to have the soldiers firing from much further distances (not less than 100 yards) to reflect the low casualties. Participants naturally want to enjoy the full battle rather than lay down in an ant bed or mud.

An alternative (used rarely) is to draw lots to see who gets killed, wounded or captured and have the individuals keep it to themselves right up to the moment.

Safety is the primary concern, fun second, and authenticity is about 8th. Just my two cents.
