Re: Pvt. Boudreoux gets baptized

Miss Sally: (It must be catching, Colonel.) Cajun is a derivative of "Acadian", from an area of Canada. in the late 1600s or early 1700s, (someone check me on this) the French speaking Catholics of that region were deported by the British Anglicans, to New Orleans. They adapted to the swamps and bayous, maintaining the language and customs they had in Canada, and creating zydeco music. This a vast simplification, but I'm working from memory here. There was a love story (naturally) regarding one Evangeline and her lover, whose name I doubt if I ever knew. Longfellow wrote a poem about them, named (surprise) "Evangeline." Many years ago I went down to Thibedeaux, about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans, to shoot some Orkin Exterminator commercials. They were based on a real employee, who used a pirogue (a dug out canoe) to get around the bayous and service his customers. As it happened, I set my tripod up next to the bayou and right atop a fire ant nest!!! I could have used an exterminator myself then!. The Cajuns jokingly refer to themselves and each other as Coon*sses. (fill in the blank) but I wouldn't try that if you met one. They are warm, friendly people, and made us right at home for the week or so we were there. Stan
