Yes, I think you're right. The fall of Island No. 10 opened the Mississippi up all the way down to Vicksburg basically. The South knew the value of the spot, having abandoned their fortifications at Columbus, KY in favor of a more defensible position down river, but couldn't hold it. That was another brilliantly executed campaign in which Pope captured a large number of Confederate troops and supplies at very little cost to himself. ouch!
