The growing dissatisfaction in the Northern states with the war in 1864 was very much a part of Lincoln's re-election in November. McClellan, Lincoln's democrat opposition, ran on an antiwar platform

So then possibly the most influential battle would have been that victory or victories that reversed public sentiment that this thing was winnable after all, leading to renewed confidence in Lincoln and his subsequent re-election?
