David, the CSS Virginia was commanded by Marylander Franklin Buchanan when the Virginia attacked the Union blockade fleet at Hampton Roads and sank the USS Cumberland and Destroyed the USS Congress.

On this day one single ship, the CSS Virginia suddenly made Wooden ships obsolete.

Captain Buchanan was wounded by enemy musket fire and had to turn over command of the ship to Lieutenant Catesby R. Jones who came back and attacked the USS Monitor the next day.
