Some of mine could not read or write, what did their wives do when they did not come back, several besides a wife left 6 small children. Most of the wives did not remarry. I treasure the letters that I have from those who could write home. None were as tearjerking as this one. One came home from prison to find out his wife had died. I can only wonder of the hardships they endured.
