Thanks George.

It would seem from what little I have read that Mary was pretty much estranged in her relationship with her father and stepmother. Her father was at one time a State legislator in Kentucky and wielded a good bit of political power in his day.

Mary seems to have been somewhat of a socialite because fo her fathers connections and kept in pretty high classed company. One of her Beau's at the time was reputed to be none other than Stephan A. Douglas of the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates, before she married Lincoln on the sly and in a hurried manner.

So I am pretty sure that the Todd family, at least the father with his political connections, seemed to have been a part of the pro-secession faction of Democrats in Kentucky. Even Lincoln during the Lincoln-Douglas debates did not argue against slave ownership.

Whether or not Mr. Todd owned slaves, I have not been able to find out. I suspect that Mary's abolishionist stance while she was in the White House may have been either for political purposes or she was in rebellion against her father political views. Her relationship to Lincoln himself may have well been because Mr. Todd thought that old Abe was beneath Mary's social status.

I guess another point would be if Mr. Todd did own slaves were they confiscated under the Confiscation Act of 1862? Or was he allowed to keep his slaves until the passage of the 13th amendment? Certainly Mr Todd's sons and a couple of his son-in-laws were not loyal to the Union.
