When Georgia called her convention, William Wofford and two other men were chosen from Cass, now Bartow, County to attend. They all opposed secession, and voted against it. However, when the vote was for secession, Mr. Wofford offered his services to his state, and later raised the 18th Georgia. General Wofford returned to Georgia from Virginia in January, 1865, and was appointed by Davis to command the North Gorgia region. He brought a semblance of order to the area, controlling the deserters, unattached soldiers, and others who were making trouble for the citizens. He formed them into a cohesive force, and surrendered from 400 to 700 men at Kingston, Georgia, in May of 1865. Stan
