Keith, I had read that also, and the fact that he never really had strong identification with any one state. But the fact that he dared criticize REL after the latter's early death, didn't help JL's cause much. In addition to his unpopular political stance of course, the character assassination plot successfully implemented by Jubal Early, W. N. Pendleton and other Virginia officers to scapegoat JL for the loss at Gettysburg and by extension the war, put the final nails in Longstreet's coffin, as far as being cheated out of his rightful place in the top echelon of Confederate heroes is concerned. But in the final analysis, he proved to be his own worse enemy, exhibiting in the writings of his later years confusion, vanity and jealousies that weren't apparent in his early battlefield years.

I would recommend to you the great book by Prof. Wm. Garrett Piston, "Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant: James Longstreet and His Place in Southern History."
