Bob...I don't think there was any difference between West Virginia leaving Virginia and the states in the Confederacy leaving the Union. It might appear that the United states didn't either. Jefferson Davis although imprisoned for a spell was never brought up any charges of treason or such. And i think that some believed the comparison with West Virginia would be brought to the table. And as we have discussed before, there was never any formal backing down from the Confederate States but only a surrender of independent armies on various dates. There was never a formal surrender or disbanding (not the word I'm looking for) of The Confederacy. Maybe this could explain why some think that the war isn't over. I'd have to side up with them.
