General Robert E. Lee to Governor Stockdale of Texas

I have read it in the book:The South Was Right...had to do with an interview where Stockdale had told the person that Texas had "non of the Spaniel in her" or something to that effect, when asked about views about the war and after. Lee then said the above quote to Stockdale latter on in private. I have wondered if Lee intended to have the quote repeated latter. I have seen several SCV web sites have it posted.
